We love just about everything to do with MK4 Supra. The legendary 2JZ-GTE powerhouse has endless performance potential, with exterior styling that still holds its own, even by today's standards. One of the few things that Toyota didn't do well with the mighty 2JZ equipped super-car tamer, was providing adequate forward and interior lighting. We spent some time with this stunning Series 1.5 RZ upgrading the various incandescent lights to LED, and we think the results speak for themselves.
MKIV SUPRA | LED HEADLIGHT UPGRADE
Despite the deceiving markings on the OE headlight lens, the high-beam and low beam both house HB3 9005 sockets. This allows our Copper Head LED upgrades to be installed in under 10 min, and provides a perfect distribution of light through the project and reflector optics. The cut-off line remains razor-sharp, with the rest of the beam pattern remaining very smooth and free of any shadowing.
We've all seen Supra with yellowed and tarnished headlights. This is likely due to the fitment of the UV-emitting HIDs; which are vastly inferior to our LEDs that do not emit any UV light.
MKIV SUPRA | LED NUMBER PLATE LIGHT
This is an easy win and really adds a contemporary touch to the overall look of the Supra's rear end. Undo the two Philips screws to access and replace the lights.
MKIV SUPRA | LED MAP/DOME LIGHT UPGRADE
We've found the map/dome light LED retro-fit to be one of the most rewarding upgrades. The Supra seriously lacks interior lighting (and cupholders!), so making the most of what it does have makes the world of difference. If you look closely you will see two small slits design to accept a very narrow pry tool. Simply gently pry and the lens cover will pop right off. From there you need to push and simultaneously twist the bulbs to remove them from the socket. The reverse to install the LED upgrade.
MKIV SUPRA | LED BOOT LIGHT UPGRADE
The A80 Supra has an infamous reputation for having a tiny boot volume. Even so, the halogen trunk light still struggles to fill the cargo area with a useful amount of illumination. Luckily, this is a very straightforward install. Just undo the two Philips screws and you will have access to the bulb.
MKIV SUPRA | LED GLOVE BOX LIGHT UPGRADE
You would be forgiven for not knowing the Supra has a glove box light. The tiny 4w incandescent light really struggles. The bulb sits inside a plastic cover that clips onto the housing, simply release the clip from the rear of the housing and the hinged cover will open up. We found it easier to release the entire housing from the cavity and then pop the hinged cover.
MKIV SUPRA | LED ASHTRAY LIGHT UPGRADE
The gear selector console is held in with clips, a mild amount of constant force start from the ashtray side working forwards will pop it right off. From there the lamp holder simply slides out. Who on earth smokes in the car these days?! Although not a game-changing upgrade, it's got to be worth a kilowatt or two, right?
MKIV SUPRA | 1000 LUMEN REVERSE LIGHT LED UPGRADE
New to our range of LED conversion kits are the 1000 lumen high output globes. Available in T10/15, T20, and BA15S they will suit just about any car on the market. Compared to our other conversion globes they offer a much brighter illumination with a slightly different installation method. A good customer has thrown together a short video briefly describing the installation, as well as giving a useful comparison between the factory halogen globes. Click the link below to watch!
READY TO TEAR UP THE RACE TRACK
It would be rude not to show our 2JZ community what the Supra featured in this blog post goes and sounds like. Crack the sound and enjoy.
